Questions on Khutba
Question:
Salam
1. Upon the commencement of the khutbah, is there is a preferred position to be in? I have seen people in tashahud position with hands on their thighs and others with hands folded.
2. Should we be looking at the khateeb or looking downwards?
3. Finally in the second part of the khutbah near the ending when dua is made should we say amen and raise our hands?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
- During the Khutbah, it is permissible to sit in any position one chooses. However, to sit in the Tashahhud position is preferable with the hands on the thighs.[1]
- During the Khutbah, it is preferable that one should be looking at the Khateeb whilst his body is facing the Qiblah.[2] Nevertheless, if one looks down during Khutbah, this is also permissible.
- When the Khateeb makes Du’a during the Khutbah one may say Ameen in the heart without raising one’s hands. To raise one’s hands and to say Ameen audibly during Khutbah is Makruh Tahrimi (reprehensibly disliked).[3]
