Can you please clarify whether the dua for opening the fast needs to be read before actually breaking it or after breaking it. I have heard conflicting points of views from people

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam used to recite the following Duas upon breaking his fast:

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ الله (سنن أبى داود)

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صَمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ (سنن أبى داود)

With regards to both of these Duas, the Ulama (scholars) have stated that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam used to recite these Duas after breaking his fast.[1]

(وَعَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ زُهْرَةَ) تَابِعِيٌّ يَرْوِي عَنْهُ حُصَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيُّ الْكُوفِيُّ، ذَكَرَهُ الطِّيبِيُّ (قَالَ: إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – كَانَ إِذَا أَفْطَرَ قَالَ) أَيْ دَعَا، وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْمَلَكِ: أَيْ قَرَأَ بَعْدَ الْإِفْطَارِ، وَمِنْهُ ” اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ ” قَالَ الطِّيبِيُّ: قَدَّمَ الْجَارَّ وَالْمَجْرُورَ فِي الْقَرِينَتَيْنِ عَلَى الْعَامِلِ دَلَالَةً عَلَى الِاخْتِصَاصِ إِظْهَارًا لِلِاخْتِصَاصِ فِي الِافْتِتَاحِ وَإِبْدَاءً لِشُكْرِ الصَّنِيعِ الْمُخْتَصِّ بِهِ فِي الِاخْتِتَامِ (مرقاة المفاتيح، باب في مسائل متفرقة من كتاب الصوم)
