Istikharah for Divorce

Question:

Assalamalaikum I wanted to know if I can perform ishthikhara for divorce? My husband wants it but I don't. But I want what's best for us to happen.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

Islam encourages couples to maintain their marital relationship as much as possible. Divorce and separation is only a last resort after all possibilities to reconcile have been exhausted. In Islam, divorce is the most despised permissible action to Allah.

We advise you and your husband to seek assistance from an experienced individual, perhaps a local, reliable scholar who may be able to offer counseling.

If all attempts to reconcile fail, and the experienced individual who is doing counseling feels that divorce may be the only feasible option, then you and your spouse may do Istikharah and make a decision accordingly.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
