Question:

Salam

Is it true that if someone wants to pray the post-fardh Sunnah prayers of Jumuah at his house then he should only pray 2 Rakahs and if he wants to pray at the mosque then he will have to pray 4 rakahs.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

According to Ishaaq Rahimahullah, if one performs the post Fardh Sunnah prayers of Jumu’ah Salah in the Masjid, he will perform four Raka’aat and if he performs them in his house, he will perform 2 Raka’aat.[1] However, this is not the opinion of the mainstream Fuqaha (Jurists).

According to the preferred view, there are a total of 6 Raka’aat post Fardh Sunnah prayers of Jumu’ah i.e. 4 Raka’aat Sunnah Muakkadah (emphasized Sunnah) and 2 Raka’aat Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah (non-emphasized Sunnah).[2] Consider the following narrations:

(وَرُوِيَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَنَّهُ: أَمَرَ أَنْ يُصَلَّى بَعْدَ الجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ أَرْبَعًا.(سنن الترمذي،  بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَبْلَ الجُمُعَةِ وَبَعْدَهَا

It is narrated regarding Ali Radhiyallahu Anhu that he used to command that 2 Raka’aat (Sunnah) should be performed after the Jumu’ah Salah followed by 4 Raka’aat (Sunnah). (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

(عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ صَلَّى بَعْدَ الجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أَرْبَعًا. (سنن الترمذي،  بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَبْلَ الجُمُعَةِ وَبَعْدَهَا

Ata Rahimahullah narrates, “I saw Ibn Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) perform 2 Raka’aat (Sunnah) after the Jumu’ah Salah and thereafter perfomed 4 Raka’aat (Sunnah). (Sunan at-Tirmidhi)
