Working in a store that sells Haram items

Question:

Asalam u alaikum,

My question is, is it halal to work in a store which sells pork, alcohol and other haram products? I asked one Aalim and he said we can work in such stores, the reason he told was we can work as an employee because it is out of our control but it is haram if you own the store and sell these products. I wasn’t satisfied with his reply, as a mufti can you guide me please? Hoping for a quick response.

JazakAllah.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If one works as an employee in a Muslim owned store that sells impermissible items, then it is permissible to work in such a store with the following two conditions:

  1. More than half of the income of the store is from Halal sources (such as from selling permissible items).[1]

  1. The employee’s work entails only that which is of a permissible nature and does not entail any impermissible activities such as serving, buying or selling impermissible items.[2]

If one works as an employee in a non-Muslim owned store that sells impermissible items, then it is permissible to work in such a store with the following condition: [3]

  1. The employee’s work entails only that which is of a permissible nature and does not entail any impermissible activities such as serving, buying or selling impermissible items.[4]

Nevertheless, one should keep in mind that it is not advisable to be in an environment where one’s Deen may be at risk.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

(Mufti) Abdul Azeem bin Abdur Rahman
